Classic Pinwheels by Deborah Hearn

"Classic Pinwheels" (90 1/2" x 102") is easy to make even though it appears
complex. A multitude of florals stitched into Pinwheel blocks and
off-set by darker Frames Square blocks help achieve the lattice look
in this floral quilt.

Preparation

  1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each 5" small light print square.

Directions
For the Pinwheel blocks:

  1. Place a 5" marked square on a 5" medium or dark square, right sides together. Stitch 1/4" away from the drawn line on both sides, as shown. Make 126.

  2. Cut the squares on the drawn lines to yield 252 pieced squares. Press the seam allowances away from the light print.

  3. Lay out 2 matching medium pieced squares and 2 matching dark pieced squares to form a pinwheel, as shown.

  4. Stitch the squares into pairs. Join the pairs to complete a block. Make 63.

For the Framed Square blocks:

  1. Stitch two 2" x 5 1/2" burgundy print strips to a 5 1/2" large light print square to make a unit, as shown.

  2. Stitch two 2" x 8 1/2" burgundy floral strips to the remaining sides to complete a Frames Square block, as shown. Make 64.

Assembly

  1. Referring to the quilt photo, lay out the Pinwheel blocks and the Framed Square blocks on point.
  2. Place the setting triangles around the outside edge.
  3. Stitch the blocks and triangles into diagonal rows. Join the rows.
  4. Center and stitch a corner triangle to each corner. Trim the triangles to square the corners.
  5. Finish the quilt as described in the General Directions, using the 2 1/2” x 44” small burgundy print strips for the binding.
